"good art is not what it looks like, but what it does to us"
- Roy Adzak
I made Her Shadow as a reflection on the inner voice so many of us know, the one that watches, weighs, and quietly shapes how we see ourselves.
A lot of my work begins with emotional states translated through symbolic encounters with the self, the body, and the natural world. In this piece, I wanted to explore the shadow not as something separate, but as something closely tied to us, a companion form that can reflect what we carry and what we are still learning to understand with more clarity and care. This piece is less about an inner critic, and more about an inner voice and the individual task of deciphering when it is of assistance and when it is detrimental.
To create this piece I knew I wanted a bed-sheet ghost approach. To remain as deliberate as possible, I custom designed my own repeat pattern and had it printed on fabric. My model wears that fabric as I photograph her twice in each scene and work the imagery together as a digital composites.
