"When we pour our heart into works we love, it carries the experience we had in making it, with it. Even after it has left our hands"
- Joel Uili
I made Fat Blanket as an exploration of choosing comfort, and of what can shift when warmth and ease are fully welcomed.
Generously layered and visibly thick was mu mantra for this piece. I was interested in warmth as something to move toward on purpose, something beautiful, enveloping, and worth making room for. Through scale, texture, and surface, the piece becomes a way of honouring the pleasure of being held and at ease.
Constructed from vintage mohair and acrylic panels layered with quilted textile fill, the work is hand-stitched into a dense textile form. Wool stitching and fabric frangipani flowers create a lush, tactile surface. Part sculpture and part blanket, the piece holds an invitation to choose what feels nourishing, and to let comfort take up space.
