"Artists give people something they didn't know they were missing"
- Daniel Pink
I made The Doormat as a reflection on people-pleasing and the moment we begin to recognise the cost of making ourselves too easy to walk over.
Across the two images, I captured a figure beneath an oversized doormat, her body becoming the surface others are meant to pass across. The gesture is symbolic, but may feel uncomfortably familiar. It speaks of the habit of laying oneself down for the comfort of others, and to the quieter, more uncertain moment when awareness begins to return and we start to look out from underneath.
A lot of my work begins with emotional states translated through symbolic form and staged photography. In this piece, I wanted to make visible the weight of over-accommodation - the way it can become habitual, shaping how we relate, what we allow, and how easily we may disappear inside what is expected.
